“Tryptophan makes me too tired to do anything on Thanksgiving!”
We hear you—we really do. The thought of getting up and out of the house on Thanksgiving is a violation of long-standing holiday rules. But the old tryptophan excuse won’t fly anymore. Either find a better excuse or join all the cool kids in celebrating the newest Thanksgiving tradition: leaving the couch.
Where should you go if the sofa is off-limits? All around Lawrence, several special Thanksgiving events start on Turkey Day (and, if you’re a glutton for punishment, the area’s got numerous 5K morning races). So, lace up them sneakers. Here are some of your best local options.

18th Annual Holiday Open House and Craft Show

With immense rustic flare, Barb’s Country Barn is a staple within Topeka’s rabid antiquing community. So too is her Holiday Open House and Craft Show, an annual tradition not unlike Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls. This year’s Thanksgiving event in Topeka is held during the weekend of November 23 and 24, and visitors can expect a mad rush of knick-knack-seekers from start to finish. Vendors will be selling bath bombs, handcrafted jewelry, towels, fudge, honey, candy, antiques, and much more.
View Barb’s event page for details, times, and an entire list of the year’s vendors.

The excitement always ramps up on Thanksgiving when Baldwin City’s Midland Railway begins its POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride. As one of the best holiday events for families around, the POLAR EXPRESS Train Ride offers passengers a “magical one-hour trip to the North Pole,” complete with hot cocoa, cookies, sleigh bells, and a reading of the classic children’s book. Who knows—maybe Jolly Old Saint Nick will make a guest appearance, gifts in tow.
Purchase your Thanksgiving Day tickets early because they sell out fast. (And don’t forget to wear your jammies.)

WinterFest at Worlds of Fun

Just because its waterpark is closed doesn’t mean Worlds of Fun isn’t a great fall destination. From November 23 to December 31, the Kansas City amusement park enters “holiday mode,” transforming the park into a nighttime winter wonderland fit for an ice king. Festive live shows, performances by celebrity holiday characters, ice skating, cookie decorating, Christmas lights—you name it, WinterFest’s got it. Talk about turning the dial on seasonal cheer to 11.
View open attractions and purchase your WinterFest tickets online. (And wear winter clothes instead of jammies.)

Gingerbread Homes for the Holidays

Expect sugar and spice and everything nice at the Topeka Performing Arts Center around Thanksgiving this year. From November 22 to 24, guests can nibble on homemade candy while strolling down Sweet Tooth Lane, construct gingerbread houses at Graham Cracker Junction, and watch Topeka N-Trak’s model trains go choo-choo
All proceeds will help fund the TPAC’s Youth Education Programs, of which we’re big fans. If you can spare the $3 admission fee, we highly recommend visiting GBHH. Click here for more details about this family-favorite holiday event in Topeka.
